Joni Turville has been appointed to the position of executive staff officer, Professional Development, by Provincial Executive Council, effective August 1, 2009.
After Turville winds down her current employment as a consultant with the Edmonton Regional Learning Consortium, she will join the executive staff at Barnett House and put her vast experience and varied knowledge to work, assisting the revamped Professional Development program area in achieving its goals and objectives.
In addition to teaching, Turville has worked in the capacities of consultant, coordinator, program manager, instructor, facilitator and advisor. She has done so with a variety of organizations, including St. Albert Protestant Schools, the University of Alberta, and the Bureau of Education and Research. Through the nature and variety of her work, Turville has developed exceptional strength in the area of professional development, as well as in communications and technology, all of which will make her a valuable asset to the ATA.
Turville’s involvement with the ATA spans more than 20 years and has seen her take on the roles of local PD committee member, ATA instructor, school representative and local curriculum committee member. She also held several positions, including president, with the North Central Teachers’ Convention Association.
Turville earned both her BEd and MEd at the University of Alberta.
The Professional Development program area endeavours to establish and maintain high standards with respect to the practice of individual teachers and the teaching profession. To achieve this, it offers a range of services to local associations, specialist councils, teachers’ conventions and teacher groups. The program area focuses on matters related to curriculum and student evaluation; teacher education and certification; diversity, equity and human rights; and teacher qualifications and the provision of field service.
