The Association’s Provincial Executive Council has appointed Dr. Philip McRae to the position of executive staff officer, Government, effective August 1, 2009.
McRae comes to the Association with an impressive body of research, teaching and technology-focused work experience gained through employment in a diverse range of environments. At Red Crow Community College, on the Blood reserve in Standoff, Alberta, he taught English and social studies at the 10, 20 and 30 levels. He taught academic English at the Dubai Men’s College in the United Arab Emirates. He was a secondary teacher and university instructor in Lethbridge and held management positions with Alberta Education before taking on duties as a graduate course instructor at the University of Alberta. McRae is currently director of the Alberta Initiative for School Improvement (AISI) with the Faculty of Education, University of Alberta.
McRae has been directly involved in a number of funded research projects, most recently as the principal investigator for the study of teachers’ working conditions being conducted by the ATA. In 2007, McRae and his research partner, Dr. Jim Parsons, were joint winners of the ATA’s Educational Research Award for their study Celebrating School Improvement, which drew from hundreds of school-based projects implemented by teacher-researchers as part of AISI.
With his diverse teaching background and extensive experience in research and technology, McRae is a valuable addition to the Government program area.
McRae holds a PhD from the U of A, an MEd and a graduate certificate in educational technology from the University of Southern Queensland, and a BEd from the University of Lethbridge.
The Government program area oversees all aspects of the Association’s internal and external operations, encompassing research, administration, government relations and communications with its local associations.
