Dr. Janice Wallace is this year’s recipient of the Canadian Association for the Study of Women and Education (CASWE) Award. The award is offered annually to a Canadian woman or group of women who have made an outstanding contribution to women and education.
Wallace, associate dean, Undergraduate Teacher Education, Undergraduate Student Services, University of Alberta, has been an active member of the ATA’s Gender Equity Subcommittee since its inception in 2003. She has guided the work of the subcommittee, providing access to current literature, contributing an annotated bibliography to the ATA’s website, and addressing national and provincial seminars on gender issues. She was the ATA’s representative at the Canadian Teachers’ Federation’s social justice conference and contributed her insights in “Inclusive Schooling and Gender” for the conference’s follow-up publication, Education for Social Justice. Wallace’s strengths as a scholar are complemented by her ability to stay in touch with the real world of teaching and education. She serves not only as an exemplary model for feminist scholarship and leadership in Canada, but as a dedicated and informed member of the ATA’s important work promoting social justice and equality.
