Here be dragons

A student, under the guidance of dragonologist Kristin Paynlyk (right), recites the dragonologist’s oath. A certified dragonologist studies dragon legends and protects the noble creatures.

While most students were enjoying the outdoors during their summer vacation, some intrepid souls were seeking out dragons in the dark vaults of the Royal Alberta Museum during a week-long camp coinciding with the museum’s exhibition “Dragons: Between Science and Fiction.” The museum’s vast collection of artifacts and specimens inspired students to write legends and create artwork about dragons. Students discovered the fascinating history of dragons from around the world, learned how to care for dragons, and unleashed their inner dragons through dance, drama, writing and art. The exhibition runs to September 14.—Photo by Yuet Chan
