Public education crusader named chancellor

Joanne Cuthbertson

A long-time public education advocate has been elected as Chancellor of the University of Calgary. Joanne Cuthbertson was the founder of SPEAK (Support Public Education—Act for Kids) and a member of APPEAL (Albertans Promoting Public Education and Learning). SPEAK was honoured with the ATA’s Public Education Award in 1997, and APPEAL earned the award in 2003. "I’m tickled pink," said Cuthbertson about her chancellorship. "I’m excited because education is so important to me. I’ve spent a lot of time trying to raise awareness of the value of public education and how important these institutions are to our quality of life, and this position is an extension of that." The Chancellor represents the university in the community. In addition to chairing the Senate and Chancellor’s Club, she will be a member of the Board of Governors and the Board’s Executive Committee. As Chancellor, Cuthbertson will also preside at convocation and confer degrees.
