Reading is the focus at Highlands Junior High School in Edmonton. Principal Jennifer Allen says the Young Reader’s Conference at Highlands is "an opportunity for young people to learn and be inspired by fantastic local literary talent. We know that the better readers our students become, the more successful they will be in all areas at school and throughout the rest of their lives."
The conference is also an opportunity for Highlands to showcase one of its most interesting annual events. More than 120 Grade 6 students attend the conference from surrounding elementary schools. This year’s Reading Conference highlights included presentations by authors Marty Chan, Barbara Smith, Ken Tingley, Katherine Holubitsky, Brad Smilanich and Joan Galat. Poet Laurie MacFayden, illustrator Lorna Bennett, television reporter Joel Gotlib and comedian Douglas Wheeler shared their talents with students, and the school’s drama, art and cheer programs were highlighted.
