Students attending John Paul II High School in Fort Saskatchewan recently placed bids in the school’s auction entitled "Privileges for the Underprivileged." The auction, designed to raise funds for an orphanage in Guangdong province in China, was the brainchild of the Student Leadership Program.

Program members plan, produce and evaluate the school’s cocurricular events. "This is an energetic and socially aware group," says Maureen Parker, teacher and program leader. "We are committed to contributing to the school, the local community and the global community through the projects we plan."

School staff suggested special privileges that students and staff could bid on, with the highest bid winning the privilege. Privileges included the opportunity to sit in the teacher’s chair for a day, a romantic lunch for two in the school’s chapel and a game of dodge ball against the teachers.

Jordan Schiltroth, a Grade 11 student and member of the leadership program, was travelling with her family through Guangdong province this past summer when she visited the orphanage. She was disturbed by the lack of facilities and residents’ high level of poverty. Back in Fort Saskatchewan, Jordan suggested that the school raise funds for the orphanage.

Even staff members got into the action, feverishly bidding against students. In the end, more than $1,200 was raised. The funds will be delivered to the orphanage by the Schiltroth family at the end of March.
