This year’s Provincial Skills Competition, held on May 13 and 14, featured 600 trade and technology students competing in 40 events at Edmonton’s Northlands AgriCom. Over the two days, the Olympic-style competition tested students’ skills to find the best young trades people and technologists in Alberta. The competition featured a wide variety of careers, from culinary arts to welding, from computer animation to auto service. Thousands of students from across Alberta watched the competition and explored potential careers. The event is also Alberta’s largest trade and technology career fair, and it features interactive public demonstrations, industry experts, potential employers, labour groups and technical institutes. The Provincial Skills Competition was a stepping stone to the Canadian Skills Competition, which took place May 20–23, in Charlottetown, PEI. Calgary will host WorldSkills 2009, September 1–7. The competition will be the largest international event to take place in Calgary since the 1988 Winter Olympics.
