Take steps to maximize your lump sum payment

The 2007 memorandum of agreement between the Alberta Teachers’ Association and the government provides for a one-time lump sum payment to teachers employed under contract.

Teachers who were under contract to more than one school jurisdiction between September 1, 2007, and April 30, 2008, must take immediate action to maximize their lump sum payments.

The memorandum of agreement recently concluded between the ATA and the government provides for a maximum one-time lump sum payment by the government of $1,500 to teachers employed under contract to any of the province’s 62 public, separate and francophone school jurisdictions on April 30, 2008. The amount paid reflects service provided between September 1, 2007 and April 30, 2008. Payment to teachers who have less than full-time employment during this period will be prorated.

Teachers who have been working under contract to more than one eligible employer between September 1, 2007 and April 30, 2008, should take immediate steps to ensure they receive their full entitlement.

This situation would typically arise when a teacher has had temporary contracts with two or more school jurisdictions during the course of the current school year.

In this case, the teacher is responsible for advising his or her April 30, 2008 employer, in writing, that “XX number of days” were worked, under contract, to “AAA School Jurisdiction.” The teacher is further responsible for having such other employer(s) verify the employment information. Once it has received this information, the school board employing the teacher on April 30, 2008, should include the full prorated fulltime equivalent amount in its submission to the School Finance Branch.

Teachers must provide this information to their April 30, 2008 employer prior to April 30, 2008, and the information must include a statement from the previous employer verifying the number of days under contract.

Please note that daily substitute teaching is not considered to be teaching under contract and is not considered when calculating the teacher’s entitlement for a lump sum payment.
