ATA appoints Robert Bisson coordinator of Member Services

Robert BissonRobert Bisson, an executive assistant with the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA), has been appointed as the ATA’s next coordinator of Member Services. He will assume his duties on November 15, 2006. Bisson is replacing Calvin Fraser, who has accepted the position of Secretary-General of the Canadian Teachers’ Federation.

In his new position, Bisson will be responsible for coordinating the work of 18 staff members in the Member Services program area. Bisson will provide leadership; coordinate the work of staff; act as the Association expert on liability and legal rights of teachers; provide representation to teachers; conduct field service; and prepare and control the budget for Member Services. This program area assists teachers, both individually and collectively, with professional problems, including employment issues and relationship concerns. It implements professional conduct and practice review processes under the Teaching Profession Act and provides training and assistance to local officials and school representatives.

Bisson has been with the ATA since August of 2001. Before that, he was an administrator with Edmonton Catholic School District No. 7. He started his teaching career in Australia before moving to Edmonton in 1974. Bisson also served three years as an Edmonton district representative on the ATA’s provincial executive council and four years as president of the Edmonton Catholic Teachers’ Local No. 54.

Bisson has a bachelor of arts, a professional diploma in education and a graduate diploma in secondary education from the University of Alberta. He received his Master of Education degree from the University of Portland.
