Linda-Rae Carson, a teacher at Harry Ainlay High School in Edmonton, was one of six history teachers from across Canada to receive the Governor General’s Award for Excellence in Teaching Canadian History. The awards were presented by the Governor General at Rideau Hall on November 29.
Carson developed a Canadian history program for her senior high students called "The Canadian Historical Identity: Historical Consciousness." The project encourages students to explore connections between their families’ histories and Canadian history, and their Canadian identity and the identity of Canada as a nation. As well, Carson’s mock parliamentary debate project had students exploring the topic of "Canada’s Greatest Nation Builder: Sir John A. Macdonald or Sir Wilfred Laurier?"
The November 22 ATA News profiled the six history teachers from Alberta who were among the 25 finalists selected for the Governor General’s Awards. Teachers are chosen for their ability to inspire students to take an interest in Canada’s history. Winners each receive $2,500 and each recipient’s school receives $1,000.
