Pandemic Pulse Research Background
The impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on public education systems around the world has been both rapid and profound.
What?
As part of our ongoing ATA pandemic research studies into what teachers and school leaders are experiencing throughout the province, the ATA has designed a rapid response feedback tool known as a ‘pandemic pulse survey’ for Alberta teachers and school leaders.
The ATA pandemic pulse research studies are the only systematic documentation of the conditions and experiences of Alberta's K to 12 public schools during the COVID-19 pandemic, and as such will become an important part of the historic record.
Who?
One group of Alberta teachers and school leaders will be followed throughout the fall and winter months. This is a longitudinal chain-referral sample.
A second, randomly-selected group of teachers and school leaders across Alberta, will also be invited to participate each month as a comparison population. This is a stratified-random baseline sample.
When?
Administered throughout the Fall 2020 and Winter 2021, these 10-minute surveys gather a quick ‘pulse’ of the profession and measure the impact of school re-entry during the pandemic. These surveys are used to gain further insight into the complexities of teaching and learning conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Why?
Alberta's teaching profession has been agile by instituting emergency responses and responding to public health orders in this pandemic to create stability and continuity for our students, their families and the public education system. The pulse surveys document these responses and Alberta teachers’ perspectives.
The Association conducts research and advocates for the best conditions of professional practice needed to educate all Alberta children and to advance the goals of public education.
