Why head to the lake or the mountains when you can spend the May long weekend discussing policy and setting the Association’s 2014/15 operating budget?

Once again this year, more than 450 teachers from across the province will meet for the Association’s Annual Representative Assembly (ARA). The three-day meeting runs from Saturday, May 17 through Monday, May 19. More than 168 resolutions will be debated on a variety of topics, with emphasis on the challenges posed by technology. In addition, the ARA will respond to the recommendations of the task force on teaching excellence, curriculum development, provincial support for education and the proposed federal Fair Elections Act. A complete list of the resolutions appeared in the Resolutions Bulletin in the March 11 edition of the ATA News.

The awards ceremony is always a highlight of the weekend. During Saturday’s opening session, two honorary memberships will be presented. The awards, the ATA’s highest honour, will be presented to Kathleen Murphy-House, a respected administrator and instructional leader, and Patrick Duffy, a tireless teacher serving representative, most recently as district representative for the North West region. As well, the Public Education Award will be presented to Dr Kristopher Wells and a Special Recognition Award to Emilian Groch. For more information about the award recipients, see page 4.
