Moot points: The joys of teaching Grade 9

February 25, 2014 Ray Suchow

During a recent unit, my class had just finished creating a series of computer commercials and were looking forward to presenting the next day. One particular group, quite pleased with their efforts, asked to present in the few moments we had remaining in the period. They turned on the ceiling projector and theatre audio, dimmed the lights and introduced their commercial. After it finished, there was a stunned silence, and I could see the group’s earlier confidence start to waver. Suddenly, “That’s SICK!” was shouted out. The lunch bell sounded, and the presenters left with huge smiles—for only in Grade 9 can you get one of the highest (and rarest) compliments in the land for doing something very, very well.
