Teachers repressed

April 5, 2011
In the past few months, Honduran President Porfirio Lobo Sosa and his Education Minister, José Ventura, have launched an escalating offensive against public education and the teachers’ movement in Honduras. In late March, the conflict turned violent as the army and riot police attacked protesting teachers, parents and students, resulting in the death by security forces of teacher and human rights activist Ilse Ivania Velásquez Rodriguez. On March 30, Hondurans held a national general strike in support of teachers. Police and army shot and killed one protestor and wounded more than a dozen others.
