ATA Gold Medals in Education

Education students honoured by ATA

Each year, the Alberta Teachers’ Association awards a gold medal to the student at each of the four faculties of education who attains the highest general proficiency in the final two years of a bachelor of education program. The specific awards are the Marie-Louise Brugeyroux Gold Medal (Faculté Saint-Jean), the Milton Ezra LaZerte Gold Medal (University of Alberta), the Clarence Sansom Gold Medal (University of Calgary) and the William Aberhart Gold Medal (University of Lethbridge). These awards are administered by the student awards office affiliated with each institution and are generally awarded at convocation ceremonies in the spring.

Amy ReadmanM.E. LaZerte Gold Medal in Education
Awarded to Amy Readman, University of Alberta

In 2010, Amy Readman graduated from the U of A with a BEd. Readman says that during her student teaching placements, she enjoyed “connecting with the students and being part of their learning process.” She has taught Suzuki violin for the past five years, instructing both individual and group lessons, and has experienced the joys and rewards of teaching music. She looks forward to the continued development and growth that come with being a teacher.

Sylvie Schaller DavisLa Médaille d’Or Marie-Louise Brugeyroux
Awarded to Sylvie Schaller ­Davis, Campus Saint-Jean, ­University of Alberta

Sylvie Schaller Davis loves ­languages and history. She studied archaeology, French and comparative literature at the universities of Lausanne and Montreal. In 2010, she obtained her BEd in secondary education from Campus Saint-Jean. Davis would like to help her students develop critical thinking skills, “curiosity and lack of fear for the unknown … in order for them to better understand our complex world.”

Jenny TrinhClarence Sansom Gold Medal in Education
Awarded to Jenny Trinh, University of Calgary

Jenny Trinh is a graduate of the U of C Master’s of Teaching program. Her joy as a teacher is ignited by children’s curiosity, imagination and innate desire to connect to the larger world. She cherishes the opportunities to provide authentic learning experiences and honour the voices of her students. Trinh, a practising artist, completed an undergraduate degree in visual studies from the U of C in 2008. The arts allow her to explore the world around her and nurture her students as whole human beings.

Gysberdina Diane HoweWilliam Aberhart Gold Medal in Education
Awarded to Gysberdina Diane Howe, University of Lethbridge

Gysberdina Diane Howe completed her BA and BEd combined degrees program. Howe is efficient, creative and caring. The following comments from her evaluations give a sense of who she is. “[Howe] has a real desire to do her best and give the students a quality education.” “She is a wonderful woman and it has been my pleasure to work with her.” “She has everything it takes to become a wonderful teacher!”
