Doppmeier wins close Calgary City byelection

June 14, 2016 ATA News Staff

Heide Doppmeier is the newest district representative for Calgary City, winning a byelection by a mere 11 votes over second-place finisher Kent Kinsman. Joanne Boissonneault finished third. Doppmeier will join Kathy Hoehn and Jenny Regal in representing Calgary teachers at the Provincial Executive Council table.

Doppmeier will assume her position as district representative for Calgary City geographic district on July 1, when the second year of the current Council term begins. For her, the move will come after 10 years of Association involvement at the local and provincial levels. Doppmeier is currently a vice-president of Calgary Public Teachers Local No. 38 and has served on various committees at the provincial level, including the Association’s English as a Second Language Council.

“I have been a vocal advocate of public education my entire career and can think of no better way to address and bring forward the issues facing the talented, overworked, amazing Calgary teachers than at the provincial level,” said Doppmeier in the campaign platform she submitted to the ATA News at the start of the byelection.

The byelection was necessitated by the resignation of Kevin Kempt, who will take over as president of Calgary Public Teachers Local No. 38 effective July 1. ❚
