Pincher Creek French immersion teacher Dominique Plouffe-Chandler has won a national award for teaching excellence.
Plouffe-Chandler learned this fall that she’d been selected as the 2014 recipient of the Prix André Obadia, presented by the Canadian Association for Immersion Teachers. The national award recognizes one teacher each year for excellence in immersion teaching.
“I was quite shocked because I had no idea I even had been nominated,” said Plouffe-Chandler, who teaches at St. Michael’s School, operated by Holy Spirit Catholic Schools.
A colleague sent in the nomination along with two other letters of support. The decision of the Canadian Association for Immersion Teachers was unanimous.
Plouffe-Chandler, who has taught French immersion at the school for 25 years, said she feels both honoured and humbled to have received the award.
“We have a very supportive group of parents as well as my colleagues. I think we work well together, so it’s very much an honour that I feel was bestowed on our school and our program.”
Plouffe-Chandler was honoured at the Canadian Association for Immersion Teachers Convention, held Oct. 23 to 25 in Halifax. ❚
