Teachers’ convention season kicked off Feb. 5 with the North Central Teachers’ Convention in Edmonton.

The annual gathering is one of 10 such events, which are a winter tradition in Alberta. Teachers from across the province attend their respective conventions for two days each February or March.

Conventions give teachers an opportunity to reflect on and learn about new and innovative pedagogical practices and theories, said Mark Ramsankar, president of the Alberta Teachers’ Association.

“Teachers’ convention is one of the most important events in the whole year for a teacher,” Ramsankar said. “It’s an opportunity to step away from the daily pressures of the classroom for two days and gain some fresh perspective on the profession.”

Conventions are a core component of teacher professionalism, which in turn enhances student learning, Ramsankar added.
