Student poetry contest launched for International Education Week 2012

International Education Week (IEW), November 12–16, is an annual event celebrated in 85 countries worldwide. IEW is an initiative under the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada. IEW is an opportunity to celebrate and showcase innovative programs and activities that expose students to an international dimension, enriching their learning and preparing them for global citizenship. Alberta Education has actively participated in IEW since 2006.

For IEW 2012, students in Grades 5–12 are invited to participate in The Think Globally Poetry Contest: The Power of Voice to communicate their thoughts on why it is important to be connected with the world and how international education can help us get connected. Contest details can be found in the Teacher’s Guide to the Think Globally Poetry Contest (see website below).

In addition to the poetry contest, the province’s International Education Week Committee has developed items for use to celebrate IEW across Alberta and to communicate the importance of international education. Items are also available in French.
