Be Part of History—Legislative assembly seeks letters to the future

March 12, 2013
On June 18, 2012, Speaker Gene Zwozdesky and Minister of Culture Heather Klimchuk unearthed the 1909 time capsule from the Legislature Building’s cornerstone.

Want a fun and engaging way to get your students excited about history? Looking for a compelling and inspiring activity to ignite passion for learning? The Legislative Assembly of Alberta is seeking student letters to the future to include in the Alberta Legislature Centennial Capsule, to be opened in 2112. Help Alberta’s youth create experiences that they will never forget, and participate in the building of a lasting legacy that will connect them to future generations.

Your students could make Alberta history

Centennial celebrations were launched June 18, 2012, with the unearthing of a time capsule from 1909, the contents of which were revealed in front of thousands of spectators at the Party Under the Dome celebration in September of last year.

To launch the next century of democracy in our province, the Alberta Legislature Centennial Capsule will be placed beneath the cornerstone of the legislature building later this year, and we’d like students to help us create a meaningful message for future generations to find 100 years from now.

This is a unique opportunity to engage your students in Alberta’s history in a meaningful and fun way. Submissions may include personal touches but must focus on building a generational connection. Whether through artwork at the primary level or written letters by older students, we want students to leave a message for future generations about life today and how it may differ from life in the next century.

Space in the time capsule is limited. For more information and submission guidelines, please visit www.assembly.ab.ca. Deadline for submissions is May 15.
