The ATA: At Your Service

April 9, 2013 Shelley Magnusson, ATA Executive Staff, Government

This is another article in a series answering the question: “What does the ATA do for me?” Today, we continue our look at Member Services.

Not much in the world is free or even a real bargain. There are exceptions, though, such as the presentations and workshops offered by the ATA’s Member Services (MS) program area.

MS offers a variety of innovative and timely presentations. For example, administrators and guidance counsellors might be keen to learn more about confidentiality issues related to counselling. Situations can arise when counsellors must disclose information and cases exist in which a student’s right to privacy is paramount. MS staff will clarify the roles and responsibilities of administrators and counsellors.

Not your cup of tea? Then perhaps a presentation on dealing with difficult people and challenging issues will satisfy your needs. Or maybe your staff would like to know about the ins and outs of the practice review process. Lately, one of the most popular (and provocative) presentations has been about e-liability. This particular presentation examines issues related to the integration and use of electronic media in the classroom. Participants explore the rules regarding Facebook, Twitter and blogs, and review important guidelines for using school equipment. MS staff answer questions such as “Is the school Wi-Fi considered school property?” and “What is cyberharassment?” School staff will come away with a much better understanding of the promises and perils of today’s technology—both inside and outside the classroom.

A major initiative undertaken by MS is the Healthy Interactions facilitator training workshops. The four-day communications and conflict-resolution workshop is designed to be implemented in collaboration with school jurisdictions. Workshop participants gain increased confidence in dealing with concerns and communicating their resolution. The program focuses on helping jurisdictions develop appropriate policy and protocols for tackling communications issues.

These are just a few of the myriad presentations and workshops available through Member Services. For more information, go to the ATA website (www.teachers.ab.ca), click on For Members, then Workshops and Presentations or Healthy Interactions Program.
