October 25, 2011

Creating a great school for every student is the theme of the ATA’s invitational symposium set for November 4 and 5, in Edmonton.

The combined fall Professional Development Area Conference and Curriculum Seminar will discuss the international successes and challenges for curriculum design and development; help create a better understanding of the curriculum design challenges and opportunities for Alberta; and consider and reflect on guiding principles for designing new provincial curricula.

“Curriculum Design for Informed Transformation: Creating a Great School for Every Student” will feature guest speakers Dennis Shirley, Lynch School of Education, Boston College; Pasi Sahlberg, director general, Centre for International Mobility and Cooperation, Finland; Irmeli Halinen, head of curriculum development, Finnish National Board of Education, Finland; and Joan Engel, executive director, Planning and Standards Branch, Alberta Education.

Table discussions, group work and panel presentations will engage participants in aspects of curriculum design. Stephen Murgatroyd, noted expert on innovation policy and practice and author of more than 25 books, will serve as a facilitator and panel moderator.

The event, organized by the ATA and Alberta Education, will take place at the Sutton Place Hotel, Edmonton.
