Highlights of the Provincial Executive Council meeting held March 5–6, 2012, at Barnett House, in Edmonton

  1. Approved 24 local resolutions and 143 Council resolutions for presentation to the 2012 ­Annual Representative Assembly (ARA); assigned speakers to each resolution; and, in the case of local resolutions, approved r­ecommendations of concurrence, amendment and concurrence, nonconcurrence, referral for study and report, or action taken. The package of resolutions will be sent to locals, which will be asked to vote on whether they agree with Council’s position on each ­resolution.
  2. Approved for presentation to the 2012 ARA a report on one resolution referred by the 2011 ARA.
  3. Approved for submission to the 2012 ARA a resolution advocating for class size maximums of no more than 20 students, depending upon the type of learning situation and class composition variables.
  4. Approved for submission to the 2012 ARA resolutions urging the Government of Alberta to increase funding to existing programs and services to ­better address the issue of sexual ­exploitation of youth and ­urging the Department of Education to develop student learning outcomes and resource materials within the health and career and life management curricula to educate students to prevent sexual ­exploitation.
  5. Approved for submission to the 2012 ARA a resolution regarding working conditions for substitute teachers.
  6. Approved a draft memorandum of understanding between the Association and The King’s University College granting interim recognition of The King’s teacher preparation program.
  7. Approved a document entitled “Preferred Futures for the Alberta Teachers’ Association” and authorized its distribution to the 2012 ARA, the 2012 ATA Summer Conference and local presidents.
  8. Approved an overexpenditure for professional development area conferences and school-based professional development ­training.
  9. Approved a frame of reference for Conseil Scolaire Centre-Nord No. 2 teachers’ Economic Policy Committee.
  10. Approved the names of two teachers for addition to the Economic Consultants name bank, which is used as a source of appointments to the Economic Consultants corps as the need arises.
  11. Approved the names of 11 teachers for addition to the Pension Consultants name bank, which is used as a source of appointments to the Pension Consultants corps as the need arises.
  12. Renamed Pension Consultants as Retirement Consultants to more accurately reflect their responsibilities.
  13. Authorized the attendance of up to six Council members at “Promise and Peril: The Impact of Technology on Children, Schools and Communities,” an invitational research colloquium scheduled for April 25, 2012, in Edmonton.
  14. Authorized the purchase of six registrations and the attendance of up to six Council members at “What Is Technology Doing to Our Minds and ­Bodies,” a public lecture scheduled for April 25, 2012, in Edmonton.
  15. Authorized the sponsorship of one coffee break and the attendance of one representative at the Alberta Arbitration and Mediation Society’s 30th Anniversary “Super-Conference,” scheduled for May 4–5, 2012, in Edmonton.
  16. Authorized the purchase of seven registrations and the attendance of up to seven Council members at Public Interest Alberta’s Annual Advocacy Conference, scheduled for April 19–21, 2012, Edmonton.
  17. Approved an administrative guideline regarding advertising on the Association website and Association subgroup websites.
  18. Amended an administrative guideline regarding Association records.
