The May 15, 2011, wildfire significantly impacted the community of Slave Lake, Alberta. As a school, we felt it was important to remember this extraordinary event in an effort to begin the healing process and look forward to a bright and promising future.
We are thankful to all the wonderful volunteers, support agencies and caring individuals from Slave Lake and beyond who selflessly offered their time, energy, encouragement, Âfinancial support and donations of clothing, housewares, school supplies, food and much more.
We are proud to be a part of Slave Lake and want to thank and remember all the heroes who bravely fought to save our town. Their hands helped to stop the fire and are now working to rebuild our community.
Students and staff, after returning to school after a two-week evacuation of our community in May, created a colourful and symbolic tribute mural. At C.J. Schurter we believe that hands and handprints signify assistance, support, effort, encouragement, recognition and healing.
Thanks to Helen Gall and her Roland Michener Secondary School art students who assisted with the mural.
