South Korea, which has one of the world’s most highly rated education systems, plans to digitize its entire curriculum by 2015 and will deliver materials through computers and hand-held devices. Ju-Ho Lee, Korea’s minister of education, science and technology, said “smart education” would focus on customized learning and teaching where students could learn “whenever and wherever.” He added: “Smart education will change how we perceive textbooks. The transfer from the traditional paper ­textbooks to digital textbooks will allow ­students to leave behind their heavy backpacks and explore the world beyond the classroom.”

School meals across the United States will feature more fruits and vegetables under new standards issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Meal programs in public and private schools feed about 32 million students. Beginning July 1, 2012, schools will have to reduce sodium, saturated fat and transfats. They must also offer more whole grains and fat-free or low-fat milk. The new nutrition standards are intended to curb childhood obesity—about 17 per cent of children in the U.S. are obese.
