Hostile teacher honoured

A belligerent teacher in Kyoto, Japan, has been named super teacher for the third year in a row by the local board of education despite being repeatedly reprimanded for using corporal punishment in his classroom, smacking students and, in the latest offence, throwing a chair at his students. According to the board, the 52-year-old’s teaching methods, for which he was punished between 1997 and 2001, improve student performance.
