PM’s awards celebrate educators

Teachers across Canada, representing preschool to secondary school, have been recognized by the Prime Minister’s Awards for Teaching Excellence.

The winners were announced on May 15 and were fêted at a national awards ceremony in Ottawa. "Today we celebrate the teachers who have gone above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of young Canadians," said Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

This year, 26 awards of excellence and 69 awards of achievement were handed out. Recipients are selected by education stakeholders from across Canada. The awards recognize outstanding and innovative elementary and secondary school teachers in all disciplines who use information and communication technology to better equip their students with the skills needed to meet the challenges of a 21st-century society and economy. Early childhood education awards recognize the work of teachers in preschool programs.

Teachers are eligible for two awards: The Certificate of Excellence, which carries a cash award of $5,000, and the Certificate of Achievement, which has a cash award of $1,000.
