The ATA's highest honour—honourary membership—was presented to Dr Eric Mokosch during the opening ceremony of the 86th Annual Representative Assembly on May 17.
Before presenting the award to Mokosch, Terry Kerkhoff, ATA district representative for South West, told delegates that the award is bestowed on a person who has made an extraordinary commitment to public education in Alberta.
Mokosch began his career in education in 1963 with the Edmonton Catholic Separate School system, where he taught for two years. He then moved on to pursue graduate work at the University of Alberta, graduating in the fall of 1969 with a Ph.D. in secondary science education.
Kerkhoff explained that during his graduate work, Mokosch developed a strong interest in teacher education. As a result of this keen interest, he moved to the University of Lethbridge's faculty of education as an assistant professor, eventually becoming the dean of education, where he worked hard to promote public education.
Over the years, Mokosch has had a strong relationship with the Association. He has been on the Science Council and has represented the University of Lethbridge at numerous conferences and workshops. Mokosch has also served on numerous provincial committees, such as the Science Curriculum Coordinating Committee and the Board of Teacher Education and Certification.
"Eric Mokosch has had the most profound effect on teacher education in this province since M. E. LaZerte," said ATA Executive Secretary Gordon Thomas. "Mr Mokosch has been a major player in the development of the extended practicum. He is also the person who was most responsible for a five-year degree program at the University of Lethbridge."
In his acceptance speech, Mokosch talked about the need for communication and cooperation in public education and reminded delegates of the necessity for cooperation among all stakeholders in education. Mokosch also shared his pride in receiving such a prestigious award.
