Cassandra Hallett DaSilva
The Canadian Teachers’ Federation (CTF) has a new secretary general.
Cassandra Hallett DaSilva is a former CTF international program officer who brings a wealth of understanding about Canadian schools and teacher organizations to the federation, said CTF President Dianne Woloschuk.
Hallett DaSilva is a seasoned teacher and educational leader with experience in her hometown of Halifax, in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, and overseas in Tanzania, Woloschuk said.
"At a time when the CTF is in the process of rebuilding and revitalizing, Hallett DaSilva’s solid leadership will be a critical ingredient in our success. I have no doubt her knowledge and skill in nurturing relationships with staff, teachers and political leaders will ensure our success on many fronts," Woloschuk said.
Hallett DaSilva’s professionalism, values, bilingualism and skills as a team builder and communicator will serve the federation "extremely well into the future," Woloschuk said.
"We are also celebrating her appointment as the first woman ever to hold the position of secretary general in the federation’s 95-year history," she added.
Hallett DaSilva is also a mother of two school-aged children in Ottawa. She assumed her duties as chief administrator of the CTF on Jan. 1, replacing Dr. Calvin Fraser, who retired in December after serving eight years in that capacity.
"We are extremely grateful to Dr. Fraser, a former Alberta teacher leader, for his vision and dedication through the federation’s transformative years. We wish him well on a well-deserved retirement back in Alberta," Woloschuk said. ❚
