The Alberta Teachers’ Association

Joyce Sherwin, a principal in Parkland School Division No. 70, has been appointed to the executive staff of The Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA).

She will assume her duties as an executive assistant in the Professional Development and Member Services program areas on February 1, 2006.

Sherwin’s duties in Member Services include assisting teachers with professional issues such as termination, suspension, transfer and evaluation. She will also investigate cases in which teachers’ professional conduct has been called into question. Her duties in Professional Development include delivering programs to ensure high professional practice standards across the province.

Sherwin began her career in 1981 as an elementary school teacher in Slave Lake. From there, she moved to Saskatchewan where she taught for the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development as a teacher on a reserve school. She then returned to Alberta where she was a classroom teacher and a counsellor in schools in Westlock, Redwater and Gibbons before becoming a vice-principal in Sturgeon School Division No. 24. Since 1999, Sherwin has been a principal at two schools in Parkland School Division.

Sherwin has been actively involved in her profession, serving as chair of Parkland School Division’s Leadership Council and as a professional development facilitator. She has also served as an ATA administrator instructor.

Sherwin holds a BEd (majoring in special education) and an MEd (educational administration), both from the University of Alberta. She has also completed some course work toward a doctoral degree.
