We Are Teachers. Teaching Is Our Profession.

The Alberta Teachers’ Association is the professional organization of teachers in Alberta. Representing over 44,000 teachers working in Alberta’s public, separate and francophone school divisions, the Association promotes and advances public education, safeguards standards of professional practice and serves as an advocate for its members.

The strength of the ATA comes from the energy, engagement and enthusiasm of our members. Thousands of teachers across the province help to influence the profession and the public education system through their work with the ATA. You are invited to connect with us and stay informed about education in Alberta and your ATA.

What the ATA Does

Acts as the Voice of the Profession

Resulting from a rigorous and democratic policy development process informed by top-notch extensive educational research, the ATA is the voice of the teaching profession in Alberta and speaks from a position of knowledge and authority on educational matters.

Association communications, including the ATA News, the ATA Magazine, our social media channels and our website at www.teachers.ab.ca, keep our members and the public informed about professional issues in education.

Represents the Profession

As the bargaining agent for all teachers employed in Alberta’s public education system, your Association negotiates salary, benefits and employment conditions with the government and your employer. We also represent teachers on provincial boards overseeing your pension and benefit plans.

This spring, negotiations will begin on new collective agreements for teachers employed in Alberta's 61 public, separate and francophone school boards. The Association is encouraging teachers to stay informed about negotiations. Important decisions regarding bargaining will be made using online votes of members; please ensure you have a members' online account in order to participate.

Our staff provides expert advice on contracts, evaluation, medical leaves, maternity benefits, retirement and professional development; call 1-800-232-7208 for assistance.

Safeguards the Profession

By upholding standards related to teacher education, practice and conduct, the ATA seeks to maintain the high regard the Alberta public has for teachers. The minimum standards for professional conduct are outlined in the Association's Code of Professional Conduct.

Advances the Profession

As the premier provider of teacher professional development in education in Alberta, the ATA offers workshops, conferences, seminars, teachers’ conventions and no-charge membership to one of our 21 specialist councils. The ATA library houses an extensive collection of books, periodicals, videos and other resources for teachers.
